PH 1 Maize Hybrid Seed is an early-maturing hybrid maize variety suited for farmers operating in areas with moderate to high rainfall. With a recommended rainfall range of 800–1500 mm, it offers reliable performance where consistent moisture is available.

PH 1 Maize Hybrid Seed variety is well adapted to the Lake region and the Coastal strip, and its good husk cover supports grain protection in the field. PH 1 Maize can also be intercropped with other crops, making it suitable for diversified farming systems. It is a practical option for farmers seeking certified maize seeds in Kenya that mature quickly and fit mixed-cropping systems.

The hybrid was released in 1987 and is recommended for the hot, humid coastal lowlands (0 – 1200m asl). The hybrid requires a growing season of 75 – 120 days and a minimum precipitation of 400mm per annum. It has been found to do well in Kilifi, Kwale, and Mombasa districts. It is also suitable for the irrigated lowlands of the Tana River district. A spacing of 75 x 30 cm is recommended. It has a better husk cover and can be intercropped with other crops.
